webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV
Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that's it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there's nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Battery maker Ener1 files for bankruptcy, tied to Think Global's bumper

Nobody was that surprised when EV maker Think Global drove off into the Chapter 11 sunset, but now it's towed an even bigger company along with it. Ener1 invested heavily in Think and also manufactured the lithium-ion batteries for its cars, but all it got in return was a lethal $69 million hole in its balance sheet. The company was de-listed from Nasdaq last month and now it's seeking bankruptcy protection to restructure $81 million in debts. If it fails to get its finances in order, organizers of the 2014 Winter Olympics may need to look for another power source.

El33t's Question of the Day: What should the next game from Maxis be?

El33tonline Question of the Day

There’s no denying the importance and influence of development studio Maxis on the videogame industry as a whole. Founded by industry legend Will Wright, the studio produced some of the world’s most memorable and well-known games including SimCity, The Sims, Spore and more recently, Darkspore.

Since the departure of Will Wright, however, the innovative future of Maxis has been a little shaky, but rumours doing the rounds point to the company working on a “triple-A simulation style game.”

Set your imagination free and answer this Question of the Day:

What should the next game from Maxis be?

Is it possible for Maxis to take the simulation aspect of Spore even further, or expand on the possibilities of The Sims? Perhaps all rolled up into an RPG system like Spore combined with deeper world creation abilities above and beyond SimCity?

Let your minds go crazy and tell us what you want to see from Maxis in the future!

(If you have a Question of the Day that you would like to put to the El33tonline community, mail it to oliver[@]el33tonline.com and we’ll send it out, with credit of course!)

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

BOXX electric bike: two wheels, four corners, all-electric transport for one

Has bicycle design reached its pinnacle? Or are electric bike manufacturers just not trying hard enough? The YikeBike begs to differ, and here joining it is BOXX Corporation's diminutive BOXX. Coming in at just under a meter (or 36-inch inches) long, the 120 pound aluminum "bike" has a top speed of 35 miles per hour and can even haul up to 300 pounds of heft. Yet, despite that compact footprint, the company hasn't skimped on tech, as it boasts traction control, anti-lock brakes and yes, even LED lights. Available in one of ten colors, $3,995 nets you a base 40-mile range model, which can optionally be doubled to 80 by ticking the $599 CORE 2 box. And for those willing to spruce even further, there's a $149 heated seat and $349 1-hour charger on offer. Ready to literally hunker down on electric mobility? Go on, peep the source links below -- do it, we've even linked the configurator.

Report: Harley-Davidson sales grew 5.9% in 2011

Harley-Davidson CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide

Last year was a good one for Harley-Davidson. According to Asphalt and Rubber, the American bike manufacturer saw its sales increase by 5.9 percent globally compared to 2010. Sales in the U.S., meanwhile, were up 5.8 percent. All told, Harley-Davidson managed to move 235,188 units last year, with 151,683 of those heading to owners in the States. Those figures mean the manufacturer managed to post a net income of $105.6 million last year. By contrast, during the fourth quarter of 2010 the company saw a net loss of $46.7 million.

The global recession hadn't been kind to the company. With a model line designed to cater to the wealthy and their lust for toys, Harley-Davidson suddenly saw itself posting yearly losses. Those at the helm sold off MV Agusta and pulled the plug on Buell all together in an effort to keep Harley-Davidson up right.

Those moves seem to have helped. The company posted $4.6 billion in revenue last year, which marks an increase of 11.6 percent over 2010.

KTM 65 SX

Just a shade above the 50 SX in KTM’s pecking order for upstart dirt bikes is the 65 SX. Whereas the former caters to the little tikes, the latter is just the right sports machine for all up-and-coming riders from 8 to 12 years of age and up to a height of about 1.60 m (5.25 ft).

The design of the bike is relatively simple and easy-to-use, something that kids will have a good time with while not worrying about all the complicated trinkets that adult bikes come with. On top of that, the 65 SX boasts of an impressive 65cc two-stroke engine that excels, thanks to its PCEV (Pressure Controlled Exhaust Valve) exhaust control system, with a great deal of torque from the bottom end up and very linear power development, making it correspondingly easy to ride.

The 65 SX’s engine is mated to a six-speed transmission, and when combined with a generous suspension travel and high-quality components, the mini-crosser provides everything necessary for having plenty of fun and laying the foundations for a promising MX career.

In terms of its handling characteristics, the 65 SX features a newly developed, fully adjustable WP telescopic fork that is generously dimensioned with 35 mm outer tubes. The anodized handlebars from Renthal are manufactured from a high-quality aluminum alloy. Likewise, four-piston brake calipers and wave discs have been fitted at the front and rear of the bike while aluminum spoked wheels and the nickel-coated exhaust system round off the image of a mini-crosser that kids will undoubtedly enjoy.

KTM 250 EXC

High-performance enduro bikes are always in great demand, especially if it’s to be used in competitive races like the Extreme Enduro or the E2 World Championship. When that’s the case, KTM has a solution for one of the best enduro bikes on the market today: the 250 EXC.

Built with the ideal combination of performance and weight, the serial Erzberg winner is the enduro to beat when you’re in need of a highly competitive bike. For 2012, the bike comes with improved performance courtesy of a redesigned airbox and the flow-optimized intake flange between the airbox and the carburetor that ensures improved charging with fresh gas. Together, these features result in even freer revving and even more power in all rev ranges, making for one of the most powerful two-stroke machine in its class.

In addition to the improved performance, the 250 EXC also comes with a completely revamped chassis with a new frame and the latest WP upside-down fork with wider adjustment ranges and a new setting. All the performance and suspension improvements make the 250 EXC a bike that’s practically unbeatable in terms of weight, mechanisms, and overall stability.

There’s not a lot of things about the KTM 250 EXC that speaks of mediocrity. Certainly, anybody that rides this bike will attest that it’s one of the most rounded and versatile in its class.
