El33t's Pre-W33kend Post: Tigers and Raccoon Kids are no good for this Evil Operation

El33t's Pre-W33kend Post - Banner Logo

We’re not going to lie, everybody: This week was exhausting.

Competitions? We’ve got a few. Reviews? Lots more added and many more to come next week. An exclusive interview? Check. A hands-on preview of a massive game? We got it. News? More than you can shake your bonbon at.

And a chance to win a trip for two to gamescom 2012 in Germany? Psst, look over here.

Yes, it’s been a busy week and next week promises to be just as hectic, so members of El33tonline are going to settle down tonight and this weekend and relax with some games and other activities - find out what we’ll be up to and be sure to let us know what you’ll be keeping yourself busy with, too:

Tom

“It’s time for another couple of days respite so my mind is slowly shifting gears to accommodate the adventures and non-adventures that lie in wait. I’ll be journeying to Moses Madiba Stadium tomorrow to ride the cable car (if that’s what it is) so hopefully the view from up high will live up to what I envision.

Hopefully Saturday will see me finishing off Kid Icarus: Uprising on my 3DS as I’ve really been getting into it over the past few evenings. So much so that my PS Vita hasn’t been getting the love it deserves of late. I hope she’ll forgive me when we’re reunited…

As always, enjoy the break everyone!”

“End of March marks the end of my birthday month, which is a bit sad. The beginning of April marks the start of a new home for us, which is bittersweet. Bitter because we’re moving away from my gaming buddy Oltman (and his supportive wife) and our home of three years but sweet because we’re moving into a bigger place with a garden for my baby girl.

Telkom has done us a great service by keeping me offline for the past two and a half weeks; failing to cancel our phone line; incorrectly billing us just shy over R2,000.00 for a line we don’t have; setting a pack of wild lawyers on us threatening summons; and forgetting to install a line in our new premises, so all-in-all, my gaming experience will be drastically muted this weekend (again) and the next week or two (again).

No matter, I really should focus on the packing and moving, and try to ignore the raindrops pouring on my head tomorrow (think of me when the heavy weather hits), so no game time - for once - is a blessing in disguise.”

Oltman

“Coming to the end of a really busy week, and running out of time, i better keep this short:

Battlefield 3 Friday tonight should have my evening covered today. Tomorrow is meetings and painting and then hopefully i can get my swing on with Tiger Woods 13, now with Kinect! Yay! Then Sunday should conclude the weekend with church, some more Tiger and hopefully a braai at the parentals.

I will hopefully also have more time with Mass Effect 1, I so need to get my FemShep into ME3!!!

“Many injuries sustained saving impossible net goals leave Ian Saunders and Alan ‘Lancelot’ Rigby ending a dogged year.”

That’s your worldwide news headline for Friday - as for me, I’ll be trying to mop up Umbrella Corporation’s mess in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City and continuing (or restarting) my journey in… Journey, before trying out two classic games I’ve been meaning to play for ages, but just haven’t: Metro 2033 and Mirror’s Edge.

Oh mama mia, grazie for reading - I sincerely hope you have a great weekend full of whatever it is you enjoy doing the most and you have your full complement of mates around - it’s terrible missing a friend, even for a short while.”

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

AT&T now accepting Lumia 900 pre-orders, only those seeking cyan or black need apply (update)

Image
Friendly reminder here, folks. As expected, AT&T has opened the pre-order floodgates for the Nokia Lumia 900 today ahead of its April 8th release in the US. Interested parties can secure their reservation for the Window Phone 7.5-loaded device at AT&T's retail or online stores. While you'll be able to snag one in either matter black or cyan blue, we'd be remiss not to point out that the white version (slated for an April 22nd release) isn't yet on offer. If you'll recall, parting with $100 and agreeing to a two-year contract is all it'll cost ya' to get in on the action. Be sure to let us know if you plan on reaching for the "light" in the comments.

Update: Wowza, if $100 wasn't already easy on the wallet, Walmart is offering the device up for only $50 with a two-year agreement -- online only, though. You'll find more info at the source link below.

Update 2: Ready for more good news? According to AT&T's website, Lumia 900 pre-orders are currently slated to "arrive on or before April 6th" -- a full two days before its official launch.

Update 3: This bad boy's free after a $100 online rebate for new AT&T customers. That's a serious play for signups.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

“Girls Around Me” Creeper App Just Might Get People To Pay Attention To Privacy Settings

girlsaroundme1Cult of Mac has a great write-up of an app for iOS called Girls Around Me, which essentially displays check-ins and public profiles of girls around you. With a little shift in context it could easily be confused for a hot new startup (discoverability meets speed dating!), but no, it really is just a way for guys to creep on nearby girls who have failed to lock down their info. It's sad, but maybe something like this is what people need to shock them into understanding just how much information they put online.

Evinar – A Google Hangouts For Facebook That Broadcasts Anything (Except The Audience)

Evinar ScreenshotWith Evinar, you can't bring audience members onto a live streaming stage with you, but you can broadcast anything else. Evinar is a new Facebook Page app launching today via TechCrunch that lets you stream to a live audience nearly nearly any type of content, including YouTube, Ustream, Hulu, Facebook photos, Flickr, SlideShare, tweets, or uploaded text and images. Evinar definitely lacks interactivity. You can't collaborate or video chat with the first 10 viewers like on Hangouts, or pipe in the webcam streams of any audience member like promising startup OnTheAir. Plus you can't stream your own webcam directly. Still, web celebs and thought leaders could use Evinar to connect with their fans in more ways than a standard video stream.

Amazon App Store v2.3.0

Although the last update to the Amazon App Store brought us all the ability to go ahead and disable notifications it really didn't work all that reliably. Amazon however has now jumped the version number up to 2.3.0 and aside from fixing the notification bugs, also went ahead and updated the 3G/4G download limit from 20MB to 50MB along with the usual stability enhancements. If you already have the Amazon App store installed, you can update from there otherwise hit the link below to grab it.

Apple has Apple Stores, Samsung has... this!

Samsung store inside Phones 4u
You know those heady dreams of a new Samsung product launch today? Well consider them punctured. There's no new gadget to announce, but instead a teaming-up with UK retailer Phones 4u, offering a dedicated space for Samsung to dip its toes into retail waters. Located on London's Oxford Street -- and just around the corner from an Apple Store -- the shop-within-a-shop displays all of the Korean makers' big hitters, with several tables housing Galaxy Tab 10.1s, Galaxy Notes and Galaxy S IIs. The rest of that expansive galactic family dot the periphery of the room, but then you'd probably come here primarily to test-drive the aforementioned flagships. The tables themselves are dressed down; no pricing or carrier information clogging up the surfaces, just the devices and some Galaxy branding. Samsung's claimed the whole top floor and the shop is already training up dedicated Samsung staff to answer pressing questions like what's the point of the Galaxy Ace Plus whether that phone has Gorilla glass and when we can expect to see a Galaxy S III in the flesh.

Official: Honda announces Fit production moving to Mexico

2012 Honda Fit Sport

The strength of the Yen is forcing many Japanese automakers to consider building cars for export markets outside their home country. Honda is no different, and has confirmed that it will build the Fit hatchback at its new plant in Mexico starting in the spring of 2014.

The plant in Mexico is not the only location where Honda will build the Fit, but it will be used to supply the small hatchback to the large United States, Mexican and Canadian markets. Honda expects to build up to 200,000 subcompact vehicles per year at its plant near Celaya, Guanajuato.

Honda already builds a huge number of vehicles in North America. In fact, as pointed out in the press release after the break, more than 85 percent of the Honda and Acura models sold in America were built in the United States, Canada or Mexico. What's more, the addition of the Fit to the Accord, Civic, and CR-V means that all four of Honda's global nameplates will be produced in North America.
