Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced all the way back at E3 2006 yet the game still looks to be a long way off. Despite what its title may suggest, FF Versus XIII is more akin to the Kingdom Hearts series in terms of gameplay, featuring action RPG elements rather than the “active time battle” system used in the main Final Fantasy games.
FF Versus XIII is a PS3 exclusive directed by longtime Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura. If you’ve played any of the company’s Japanese-developed games from the last fifteen years, chances are Nomura was either a character designer or director on the project. One of Nomura’s tendencies is to work on multiple titles at once (no less than four at the moment) which means that the games he helms usually take a while to develop.
FF Versus XIII is no doubt a massive undertaking and its fanbase have grown used to the game’s nonexistent release date. However, that doesn’t mean we’re any less disappointed when Nomura confirms that the title will not be shown at yet another game show.
The latest of these failed opportunities to demonstrate how the project has come along is the Tokyo Game Show in mid-September. Speaking with the Japanese gaming magazine Dengeki PlayStation, Nomura said FF Versus XIII will not be showcased at the event. He then went on to assure readers that despite this, his team have decided when the game will receive it’s next showing.
Hopefully this happy day is within the next couple of months, and is something suitably substantial to whet our appetites for that undisclosed date when we get to enjoy a rare (and mighty) PS3 exclusive which doesn’t have Sony’s name behind it.
We’ll keep you up to speed with all the latest Final Fantasy news emanating from Japan so keep your dial tuned to El33tonline for all this and more.
