The first SSX was a snowboarding game that burst onto the scene back in 2000 as a showcase title for the newly launched PlayStation 2. Two titles followed in quick succession, but since 2003 the series has lain dormant on home consoles. That’s about to change because a next-generation SSX title is making its way to the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year.
Two developer diaries have been released so far, and both shed some light on what we can expect from this exciting new title in the SSX series. Known until recently as SSX: Deadly Descents (and now simply called ?SSX?), this new franchise entry is being developed by EA Canada, and in these diaries creative director Todd Batty talks about how they’re attempting to reinvent the series to appeal to today’s gamers.
A new pillar to the gameplay will be ?survival? - trying to outrun a violent force of nature such as an avalanche while avoiding deadly drops as you careen down the slope at breakneck speeds. A new physics engine will make your snowboard’s interaction with the slope feel much more realistic, while ?uber tricks? will make a welcome return and are sure to be more over-the-top than ever.
SSX will also feature a far more open environment than previous entries in the series, and finding your own route down the slope is certain to provide some unexpected thrills. Todd Batty mentions that a key aim for the team is to “make awesome easy” so let’s hope the final game is indeed filled to the brim with awesome escapades.
The third developer diary will be released on April 18th so stay tuned to El33tonline for more news and media related to this long-awaited update to the SSX franchise:
