The 3rd Birthday Review (PSP)

The 3rd Birthday is a one-of-a-kind PSP game in the sense that it?s the most cinematic experience I?ve seen on Sony?s handheld so far. This title?s cutscenes are so well-directed and visually stunning that they wouldn?t look out of place on a home console. There?s around forty in total, and these add up to about one hour of glorious cinematic magic ? simply unheard of for a PSP game. The 3rd Birthday?s music and story are also worthy of a top-tier release on any platform. However, where the game falls short of being an instant classic is in its lackluster gameplay and failure to conform to the standards set by its two predecessors in the Parasite Eve series. By trying to reinvent the wheel, as it were, it loses its identity somewhere along the way and becomes just another PSP third-person shooter with iffy controls and the tendency to cramp your hands.
