Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

The Engadget Interview: BlackBerry PlayBook product manager Michael Clewley

There's no getting around it: it's been a rough couple of years for Research in Motion. This week's on-time release of its PlayBook 2.0 software marked a rare bright spot in an otherwise grim era, bringing much needed features for the QNX platform such as a unified inbox, deeper social integration and updates to the company's BlackBerry Bridge app.

At the same time, the release of the 2.0 software has brought many of our outstanding questions to the fore: why weren't these features present in the first go-round? Why did the company take so long to flesh out its software? And lastly, when will we see some proper second-gen hardware? We sat down with PlayBook product manager Michael Clewley to discuss the slate's ups and downs, and how the revamped tablet stacks up in an increasingly crowded field.

TiVo releases Q4 results, announces transcoder and IP set-top box on the way

Today TiVo announced its earnings for Q4 2011 and the full year, however the most interesting note was word of a few new boxes on the way. From the sound of things, the company will deliver a four stream transcoder similar to the one we saw demonstrated at CES (pictured above) capable of dishing out video to multiple devices (phones, tablets, etc.) within the home simultaneously. Also on the way is an IP set-top box coming to retail that sounds very much like the TiVo Preview multiroom extender, however it could include access to internet video services as well. As mentioned on Tech of the Hub, CEO Tom Rogers' statements indicate the transcoder will enable both live streaming and DirecTV Nomad-style "high speed" sideloading of recorded content for offline viewing. More concrete are its positive numbers from the partnership with Virgin Media in the UK, and progress on a plan for Pace to develop TiVo-compatible set-top boxes for cable operators here and abroad. The Comcast partnership is also apparently progressing, with VOD access in beta trials and preparing to launch "soon" in the San Francisco area.

Report: UAW training 100,000 for protests on behalf of the 99%?

The 99% Spring

According to The Daily Caller, a politically conservative news site (via The Detroit News), the United Auto Workers union is helping to organize a group called The 99% Spring, which describes itself as an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The 99% Spring is a coalition of 43 organizations, but The Daily Caller says the UAW is the "powerhouse" behind the effort that seeks to train 100,000 Americans "for non-violent direct action." While UAW president Bob King has voiced support for the movement, an unknown source told The Detroit News that the UAW is merely a part of the coalition and is not its "mastermind."

Josh Bolotsky, a so-called online organizer listed as a contact for The 99% Spring, told The Daily Caller that "an independent tech issue led to some docs, both public and private, appearing briefly on [the UAW's public-facing web site]," adding that activists at the Movement Strategy Center and the New Organizing Institute were "[t]he chief co-coordinators of the overall project."

Full copies of the documentation obtained by The Daily Caller from the UAW website can be seen after the break... so we suggest you draw your own conclusions.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

NVIDIA announces development of LTE modems for Tegra 3 devices

Tegra 3

NVIDIA has announced a joint venture with GCT Semiconductor and Renesas Mobile to develop LTE modems to go along with their 4-PLUS-1 Tegra 3 processors. One thing has been missing from those awesome gaming chips, and that's the ultra-fast network speeds available when using an LTE network. This announcement will allow current partners to build next generation products with NVIDIA powered parts that not only offer great performance, but the fastest network speeds available as well.

With modern mobile gaming going to the next level in the graphics and physics departments, seeing an LTE solution from NVIDIA is great news. There's a lot of pixels and sprites to move around on your phone or tablet while playing intense games like Shadowgun, and that means a lot of data needs to move in and out of your phone for the best experience. An LTE powered Tegra 3 device is certainly going to take things to the next level.

As we've seen time and time again, once we get the hardware, the software will follow. Developers will certainly have their eye on NVIDIA, and will be able to push the envelope a bit further. And it's not just games were talking about -- Tegra 3 and LTE will give mobile users the horsepower to handle things like desktop class web browsing and multimedia, and real-time video conferencing. Combined with a product like Citrix Receiver, and you've got the ultimate mobile office.

It's easy to see that NVIDIA is serious about mobile. They have the technology, and we've been using their products in our desktop computers for ages, and with the Tegra line they have proven themselves as a strong contender. We can't wait to see what else they might have in store.

PS Vita launches in style across South Africa

It’s always really exciting to be a part of the videogame industry when a new console hits the market. It’s a journey that begins at the announcement and one that takes you through months of excitement as more details are revealed, screenshots and trailers pored over, and pre-orders placed. Discussions ensue, debates arise and then before you know it the launch day dawns and the courier is knocking at your door.

The stunning view of Johannesburg city from Randlords. Nelson Mandela bridge lights up the foreground.

Ster Kinekor hosted a stylish launch event for the PS Vita at Randlords, on the 22nd rooftop floor in Johannesburg, this part Tuesday night. We were treated to an exciting evening filled with awesome entertainment and much anticipated hands-on time with the PS Vita.

While a stage dominated the front area of the venue, TV’s dotted throughout the space ensured we could always keep an eye on the action. Whether that was wonderfully mystical dancers, the amazing sounds of Morgan Beatbox, or simply soaking up the awesome dance music that the DJ kept pumping throughout the night, there was definitely never a dull moment in this slick launch event that almost made you feel you had been transported into the future.

Part of the special UV show entertainment that we enjoyed.

Testing the launch line-up of the PS Vita was one of the highlights of the evening, and left many a gamer in awe of the console itself. The photo booth was another popular destination, with repeat visits made to snap happy memories of the evening with friends and colleagues in the industry.

All in all, the PS Vita launch event resembled the PS Vita console itself in many ways, smart, fashionable and just a little bit intoxicating. It just so happens that’s how I like them, so it’s clear to me that my PS Vita and I are destined to have a good future together.

Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views

Google Blogger Mosaic Dynamic View
Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy 'Dynamic Views'. There's a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails -- click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views -- and really, why weren't they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive -- which we're sure it will be -- these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You'll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.

Lookout launches Ad Network Detector, a new tool to manage privacy

Lookout Ad Network Detector

The folks over at Lookout Labs have released a new Android app today, and it's one that I think a whole lot of folks are going to love. Dubbed Ad Network Detector, it's an app that detects which advertisement networks are running in the other apps you've downloaded and installed, tells you what apps are using them, and lets you know a bit about what type of information they can be tracking about you.

Lets get to the meat of the issue -- ads are not bad or evil. I've been known to wear a tinfoil hat on occasion, but even I recognize that advertisements are a great way for developers to offer apps for free, and make them accessible to everyone -- not just those with a credit card, who are willing to pay (or able to pay in their country) for them from the Market. Developers deserve to make money, I get it. But we also deserve to know what info these ad networks are collecting. Let's be honest, most folks don't bother to read the permissions screen when they install an app. None of these ad networks are going to do anything illegal or inherently evil, so there's no harm in knowing more about them, right? Here's an easy way to know all of that.

Just install the app, run it and let it scan the applications you've installed on your phone. You get a handy list of things ad networks can do (including the horrible trick of putting ads in your notification bar), and how many of each you might have installed. A quick tap opens the tree, and you see the names of the culprits ad networks that are using each type of ad. Another tap and you get more information about how it all works and the apps that are using this type of placement or collection. From there, you can decide what to do. I love it when power is put back in the hands of the user, and knowing is the most important part. This is one I'll recommend to everyone with an Android phone.

We've got the download link, and a few screen caps to see how it all goes down, after the break.
