Today at Gamescom we were treated to a demonstration of Uncharted: Drake’s Deception, and boy does it look great! Arne Meyer from Naughty Dog took us through the ship sequence shown at E3 and the cargo plane sequence shown at the press conference on Tuesday. The cargo plane sequence went on a little further than the one from the press conference so we got to see a bit more of the game.
I’ll give a brief rundown of the new demo. It starts with Nathan and Elena arriving at an airport compound some place in North Africa. The compound looks like a military one, and Nathan scales the fence, leaving Elena behind. He tells her it’s too dangerous for her to also do what he’s planning to do: “It’s a one in a million shot” he says. From this poignant moment Nathan starts his run towards the goal - the cargo plane on the runway.
Nathan does lots of running and gunning, running along rooftops, jumping from a rooftop straight onto enemies, and finally running full tilt towards the plane, just as it starts to move. He can’t catch up and just as the plane is getting away Elena comes past in a jeep, picks Drake up and drives towards the fuselage of the plane.
Drake makes it into the plane and crawls through a vent only to be accosted by a huge minion. Some creative fighting by Drake leads to all the cargo going flying out the bay doors, with Drake hanging on. At this point at the Sony press conference the demo ended, but Arne went on a bit for us. Drake manages to climb back up into the plane and shoots a bunch more minions (I think he got a gun from the first minion he took out). All the shooting causes flames on the plane and soon enough everything is falling apart with luggage flying out holes in the plane.
Arne stopped at this point. We can, however, surmise that the cargo plane is the same one in the desert crash shown on all the posters. I can’t help but think Drake better have a very good reason for wilfully destroying all that property and people, so I’m intrigued about the story.
I can’t say how all of these sequences control because we haven’t been given a chance to play any single player yet. It looks amazingly fluid, but I don’t know how the scripted events would work if you didn’t know what was supposed to be happening. Then again, Naughty Dog have done this before and they do it well, so I guess we should trust them.
Arne also briefly described some of the tech improvements Naughty Dog have made over Uncharted 2. One very obvious one from the demo sequences is the improved water technology - the water in the ship storm sequence looks incredible. Another one I noticed in the demos is the way physical objects respond the larger object movements. For example, with the ship in a stormy sea there are objects sliding around and barrels rolling around all the time, following natural paths. Arne told us that the ocean itself is procedurally generated so things don’t happen on a script but happen differently each time. Nathan also responds to the rocking of the ship by steadying himself against pillars or poles. Another obvious improvement is more varied animations of Drake which make his movements much smoother. Arne said they’ve done lots more motion capture and have concentrated on facial movements to make the eyes and teeth seem more natural.
Because the desert plays a big part in the story, Naughty Dog have also spent a lot of time on their sand tech and on studying how sand functions in the world. We haven’t seen this in practise yet, but considering how impressive the rest of the game looks I’m looking forward to what they’ve cooked up.
Uncharted: Drake’s Deception is looking fantastic and is not to be missed for any PS3 owner. If you haven’t got into Uncharted yet and enjoy action adventure stories then this it’s definitely time to get into the series. If you have played the previous games then this one still looks very much worth it - it has an intriguing-looking story and incredible set pieces combined with even better graphics, animation and physics than before.
