Official: DOT teams up with Fox's Glee against distracted driving [w/videos]

In attempt to combat car accidents and fatalities caused by distracted driving, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Ad Council have teamed up with the hit Fox television show, Glee, to produce a pair of public service announcements aimed at younger drivers. These PSAs were introduced as a part of the "Stop the Texts. Stop the Wrecks." campaign that attempts to raise awareness to the danger of texting and driving.

The PSAs show Quinn Fabray, a character on Glee (played by actress Dianna Agron), driving while attempting to read a text before consequently being involved in a severe accident - the footage is taken from an actual episode of the show. According to NHTSA, about 10 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2010 were caused by distracted driving, pointing out that reading a text can distract a driver for around five seconds.

These PSAs were released on the same day that NHTSA announced a new federal program that would give grant money to states that have bans against distracted driving and/or texting while driving. As a part of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), states that have primary laws against distracted driving can be awarded up to $17.5 million. Secondary laws - which require police to pull the vehicle over for another violation to ticket a driver for distracted driving - do not qualify for the grants.

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that's it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there's nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Report: BMW suing Saab Automobile Parts for $3.2M

Saab might be all but dead, but that's not stopping automakers that were once involved with the Swedish brand from attempting to reclaim losses. According to a Fox Business report, BMW has filed a 2.6 million Euro suit ($3.2 million USD) with a Swedish district court against Saab Automobile Parts for deliveries that went unpaid.

In 2012, Saab Automobile AB signed an agreement BMW that would see the German automaker deliver four-cylinder gas engines for its 9-3 range.

The suit also asserts that Saab ordered a large number of spare parts, and no payments were made to BMW. At the time, Saab was far from liquid, and filed for bankruptcy in December of last year.

Though Saab was left with assets that totaled $500 million, the Swedish automaker's debts amounted to $2 billion, a part of which include the unpaid BMW deliveries.

According to the report, Lennart Stahl, CEO of Saab Automobile Parts AB has said "Our lawyers will now go through the lawsuit carefully and see if anything new has been added before we decide hat to do." This only adds to the fallout from the Saab closure. Recently, Saab's owner, Spyker filed suit with General Motors for $3 billion, claiming that the U.S. automaker, through its leadership, played a large part in bankrupting the brand.

With A San Francisco Launch Imminent, Lyft Is Doubling Its Fleet Of Drivers And Readying An Android App

It's been just eight weeks since Zimride's ride-sharing service, Lyft, was launched in beta, providing San Francisco users a low-cost alternative to cabs and Ubers. Since then, the service has grown a tremendous amount: It's got more than 100 drivers operating in the area, who together are taking hundreds of riders a day. Lyft works like other car transportation apps: You open it up and the app searching for available cars nearby. Difference is, those cars are driven by regular folks, not your usual surly taxi driver or buttoned up Uber driver. Users can rate their drivers, and at the end of the ride, there's a suggested donation, which is typically about 80 percent less than your average taxi fare. Drivers also rate their passengers -- more on that later.

It's practically impossible to explain the scope of the Woodward Dream Cruise that takes place every summer in Detroit to someone who's never witnessed it themselves. Here at Autoblog, we've tried using image galleries, stationary camera feeds and even a live stream attached to a Chrysler minivan in an attempt to bring Woodward coverage to the masses. Sadly, none of these efforts has proven particularly successful at conveying the actual happenings.

Watch the video down below and you'll understand why. There are miles and miles of roadway with as many as five lanes of traffic clogged with every kind of car imaginable - modern machines and classic creations on two and four wheels from American, European and Japanese manufacturers. Adding to the spectacle are a few hundred thousand spectators lining Woodward Avenue or driving their cars through the traffic. Don't forget that the Detroit Three all have some sort of official presence, too, and did we mention that it starts early in the morning and lasts until well past bedtime?

That explanation out of the way, allow us to congratulate Autoweek on its inventive idea: a radio-controlled helicopter with a professional pilot. While we still firmly believe that the Woodward Dream Cruise needs to be witnessed live for the full effect, the aerial coverage you'll see below may be the next best thing.

Psychonauts coming to PS2 Classics next week

There are already plenty of PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Store but unfortunately these are often titles that didn’t make much of a splash when they were originally released.

Thankfully a true classic will soon be added to the range of PS2 titles on the US PlayStation Store. Double Fine Productions has announced that its award-winning platformer Psychonauts will be released as a PS2 Classic next Tuesday, August 28th.

Psychonauts was the company’s first title and follows the adventures of a psychic boy named Raz who sneaks into a summer camp for those with similar powers in an attempt to become part of an elite group of psychic superheroes called Psychonauts.

The game’s script was written by Tim Schafer and Erik Wolpaw, with both receiving accolades for its imaginative and humorous characters and scenarios.

Hopefully Psychonauts will also be released on the European PlayStation Store so those of us in PAL territories don’t miss out on this classic title from Tim Schafer and Double Fine.
