April NPD: US videogame sales up 20% as Mortal Kombat dominates

Sales tracking and research firm The NPD Group has released this month?s report on the state of the videogame industry in the US, recording $961.2 million in sales across hardware, software and accessories segments of the market in April 2011 ? up from $802.4 million in April of 2010, representing a 20% increase.

These results helped the US videogame industry to a 2% year-to-date lead over 2010?s results.

April 2011 Software Sales

Software sales in the US for April 2011 were recorded at $533.6 million, which is up an impressive 24% from the same period last year. More games were sold across every console (excluding the PSP) this past month compared to April 2010, while Xbox 360 saw 3.5 million games sold for the system, which is the highest of any console this month.

Interestingly, this is the first month since November that year-over-year unit and dollar growth has been experienced in the software category.

Debut releases Mortal Kombat and Portal 2 dominated the software sales listing, as Mortal Kombat took No. 1 with a little under 900 000 units sold (reports indicate that special editions of the game pushed sales over 1 million units).

LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars managed to claim No. 3 on the listing, as Call of Duty: Black Ops and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters took No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. The other debut title this month, Michael Jackson: The Experience, appeared at No. 8.

April 2011 Hardware Sales

Videogame hardware sales for April 2011 in the US were recorded at $279.9 million, or an increase of 12% year-over-year from $249.5 million in April 2010. According to NPD, PlayStation 3, PSP and Xbox 360 all saw unit sales increases compared to the same period last year.

The Xbox 360 was the top-selling console with 297 000 units sold, ahead of the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 3.

April 2011 Accessories Sales

Videogame accessory sales in the US were up 20% for April 2011, recorded at $147.6 million. The best-selling accessory this month was the Xbox LIVE 1600 MS Point Game Card, whilst the top-ranking new accessory was the SOCOM 4: Full Deployment Bundle (which includes the game, a Move controller and the Sharp Shooter gun peripheral).
