Hardly a day goes by anymore when I don?t hear about a reportedly ?radical, new? business concept summarized succinctly as ?X? (some well-known existing business) for ?Y? (some specific market segment, use case, or other qualifier). These descriptors range from the logical ? ?Groupons for Moms? (okay, clear enough) ? to the absurd ? ?Pandora for Cloud? (huh?). Often, I don?t even understand the analogy, as it?s so obscure, or I have never even heard of the company being compared. Sure, these monikers may satisfy our need for efficiency and brevity, but I?m convinced that in the long-run, we need to expand our collective attention spans just long enough to really describe what our businesses do. Otherwise, we run the risk of setting a model for entrepreneurship that?s entirely devoid of creativity and true innovation.

Keeper of leaked HTC ROMs disappears into the ether

Can't say we didn't see this coming. Word around the campfire was that the infamous 911HTC (née 911Sniper) blog that scored leaked HTC ROM after leaked HTC ROM had itself become the target, and tonight it's gone dead. The site itself redirects to Google.com, and its pages to Google 404s, though the ROMs still live on on their external hosting pages.

A shame, since we do love leaks around here. But at the same time, not surprising -- HTC takes its intellectual property seriously (as well it should). And the flip side of that is that leaked test ROMs can be fraught with danger, as evidenced by the recent bricking of HTC ThunderBolt's running one of these unofficial radios.

Oh, well. The game goes on, folks.

Get a taste of combat with this new Alice: Madness Returns gameplay trailer

Last week we were treated to some new screenshots from EA?s upcoming Alice: Madness Returns, this time showcasing one of Alice?s more chaotic combat abilities, Hysteria.

Today you can get a glimpse into the game?s combat mechanics with this gameplay trailer.

Alice is a lot tougher than she initially looks. Watch below to see almost two minutes of action-packed gameplay footage as she takes on multiple enemies, and what looks to be a boss battle, with her new weapons which just so happen to be the head of a hobby horse, a deadly pepper grinder and a large, intricately detailed knife.

Intrigued? You should be.

Alice: Madness Returns will be hitting shelves across North America for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on the 14th of June. Until then delve a little deeper into this action adventure game that?s set in the twisted world of American McGee?s version of Wonderland right here at El33tonline.

Switched On: Devices designed to disrupt

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Industry conferences that include competitions among scores of startups generally don't look too kindly upon companies producing hardware. Nonetheless, there were quite a few physical products shown off this week at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York. These were either the main offering of companies or complements to their service offering, and judging by their demo platform of choice, the iPhone appears to be a leading agent of disruption -- the companies introducing hardware used Apple's handset to do everything from avoiding stress to measuring its biological impact. Switched On will introduce four such products after the break.

Recycled street-sign furniture is uncomfortably cool

Boris Bally Transit Chairs - Click above for high-res image gallery

Industrial designer and artist Boris Bally has taken the urban decay aesthetic to a new level, crafting tables and chairs from worn-out street signs. Bally cranks out everything from high-backed dining-table chairs, to coffee tables, to armchairs.

Bally has been working with metal in one sense or another since he was just 13 years old. Rumor even has it that he cut his teeth in metalworking by building himself throwing stars and brass knuckles.

By using recycled materials, Bally isn't only doing the environment a good turn, he's ensuring uniqueness in each piece of furniture. Bally leaves the source material's patina alone-and makes sure it's visible. Such individualism comes at a price, naturally; chairs start at $1,100 and tables range from $900 to $4500. Three new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 screenshots for you to enjoy

Activision has released three new screenshots for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Hopefully the publisher will keep the assets coming in the lead-up to the game?s release on the 8th of November for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
