NC State and CMU develop velocity-sensing shoe radar, aim to improve indoor GPS routing

The world at large owes a good bit to Maxwell Smart, you know. Granted, it's hard to directly link the faux shoe phone to the GPS-equipped kicks that are around today, but the lineage is certainly apparent. The only issue with GPS in your feet is how they react when you waltz indoors, which is to say, not at all. In the past, most routing apparatuses have used inertial measurement units (IMUs) to track motion, movement and distance once GPS reception is lost indoors, but those have proven poor at spotting the difference between a slow gait and an outright halt. Enter NC State and Carnegie Mellon University, who have worked in tandem in order to develop a prototype shoe radar that's specifically designed to sense velocity. Within the shoe, a radar is attached to a diminutive navigational computer that "tracks the distance between your heel and the ground; if that distance doesn't change within a given period of time, the navigation computer knows that your foot is stationary." Hard to say when Nike will start testing these out in the cleats worn by football players, but after last week's abomination of a spot (and subsequent botching of a review by one Ron Cherry) during the NC State - Maryland matchup, we're hoping it's sooner rather than later.

A Conversation with Saab's Victor Muller and Jan-Ake Jonsson

Victor Muller, Saab Chairman and CEO of Spyker

The news Saab has been making in the past few months - the defection of its sales director, declining sales numbers, worker layoffs - runs counter to the feel-good story of the brand's very existence. On the other side of that, though, the brand is still here, there's a resurrected factory in Sweden still pumping out cars, Jason Castriota is still working on an anxiously anticipated 9-3, and the 9-4X - unveiled to general acclaim recently at the LA Auto Show - is just months away from retail.

That's a lot going on for such a small, and new, company. We sat down with Saab chairman Victor Muller and president Jan-Ake Jonsson to find out what makes the 9-4X a real Saab, how the 9-3 is progressing, and where the 9-2 and ePower rank on the company's to-do list.

Follow the jump for the story.

Sony: 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers have been sold worldwide [Update]

[Update] Sony Computer Entertainment America’s director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold, has clarified that “[t]he 4.1 million units are global sales for the company,” before adding: “While we don’t disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales and strong demand.”

So essentially, 4.1 million PlayStation Move units have been shipped to retailers, rather than sold to customers. [End of Update]

Not to be outdone by Microsoft?s announcement yesterday regarding the incredible sales performance of the Xbox 360 Kinect, Sony Computer Entertainment has today revealed sales numbers for its set of PlayStation 3 accessories, the PlayStation Move.

And I say! These sure are some impressive numbers!

PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Move Image

Since the launch of the PlayStation Move in September, SCE has managed to sell over 4.1 million units of the motion controller around the world. According to Sony, this number ?not only shows clear success of the launch of the new motion sensing controller but also indicates positive momentum going in to the holiday season and to the year 2011.?

And I say! That?s quite right!

This number of PlayStation Move controllers joins the global install base of PlayStation 3 consoles, having recently reached 41.6 million units.

You should definitely read through El33tonline?s previous looks at the PlayStation Move motion controller and the range of games currently available for use with the device/s, and look forward to future games set to make use of the technology, such as Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2.

Acer to launch app store, will pre-load on PCs

acer alive
Our pals over at Engadget covered the Acer hullabaloo this morning, and there's one bit which blipped on the Download Squad radar. Yes, software aficionados, Acer is launching an app and content store.

It'll be called Alive, and you can't really blame Acer for the move -- they're a top-3 manufacturer selling millions of laptops and desktops every year. The opportunity to glean a few percentage points in commission for selling an app or album could amount to a significant revenue stream. Plus, there's the 'we're providing a convenience for our customers' angle. To the average computer user, finding, downloading, and installing quality apps remains a bit of a mystery. A curated store, of course, offers a solution that just about everyone is familiar with in 2010.

VisionTek Killer HD 5770 combo NIC / GPU hikes frame rates, lowers ping times for $200

Mama always said that one was never enough, and just five months after revealing its first NIC / GPU combo card to us at Computex, Bigfoot Networks has taken the wraps off of its second. This go 'round, the outfit is partnering with VisionTek to produce the VisionTek Killer HD 5770, a single PCIe card that combines an AMD Radeon HD 5770 GPU (with 1GB of GDDR5 memory) and a Killer E2100 networking card. All told, buyers are presented with two DVI ports, a single HDMI output and a gigabit Ethernet jack. The card is compatible with Windows 7, Vista and XP, and put simply, it's designed to both improve your frame rates (that's AMD's role) and lower your latency / jitter (hello, Bigfoot!). The NIC portion actually has a 400MHz onboard processor that helps minimize the impact of slight changes in your connection, and Bigfoot's management software will be thrown in for good measure. The board is expected to hit North American retail shops within a fortnight or so, with the $199.99 asking price representing a ~$10 savings compared to buying an HD 5770 GPU and Killer 2100 separately. Oh, and you get a pretty sick dragon, too.

Got a messy Photoshop PSD? TidyPSD will fix it for $9

TidyPSD, sort your jumbled photoshop PSD
If you have a friend that's a graphic designer or photographer, and you're really strapped for gifts this Christmas, how about giving them a TidyPSD?

For the meager (well, fairly meager) price of $9, TinyPSD will take any unorganized, jumbled-up PSD and turn it into a thing of Zen-like beauty. Sequentially numbered layers will be replaced with names! Unordered chaos will be replaced with layer groups!

TinyPSD aims for a 24-hour turnaround, but there's a testimonial on the site that suggests it can be as fast as one hour. They also accept bulk orders, which might be handy if you're a big design firm with sizable archives that need tidying up. Finally, if you're not happy with your TidyPSD, you can request a full refund.

Apple forces PhotoFast to abandon 256GB upgrade kit for MacBook Airs

Remember that peppy aftermarket 256GB SSD upgrade from PhotoFast that easily smoked (on paper anyway) the SSD found in Apple's latest MacBook Air? It's been halted upon Apple's request before it ever went on sale, similarly to those HyperMac batteries before it. 9to5Mac first reported the news based on a source close to the company and we just confirmed it directly with the PhotoFast GM2_SFV1_Air product manager. The risk of losing access to Apple's product licensing program was just too grave a threat to ignore. So, enjoy your 160MBps max SSD transfer rate and 128GB top-end capacity MBA 11 owners, you'll get your storage and 250MBps sequential read/write speed bumps only when Apple's good and ready to provide it themselves -- possibly sooner, we're told, if PhotoFast is given the green light to start sales after Toshiba's SSD modules (Apple's MBA partner) are available for purchase.
