British developer Criterion Games is staffing up for the next entry in “the world’s number one, multi award winning, arcade racing franchise” according to recent job listings for a senior VFX engineer and cinematic cut scene artist that were posted on EA’s Career Opportunities website.
The studio behind the Burnout series and 2010’s award-winning Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit appear to be working on a sequel to the latter title. The job listings claim that Criterion’s next game will feature “compelling in-game cinematic action sequences”, “intense car action sequences”, “terrifying jumps”, “insane crashes” and “epic car chases.”
While these phrases could just as well indicate a new Burnout title, the studio makes repeated references to Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in the adverts and emphasises how successful it has been. Take a look at the following two passages from the second job listing:
“Most recently, Criterion were responsible for Need For Speed Hot Pursuit. The Need For Speed series has been labelled ‘the bestselling racing brand in the gaming world’ after franchise sales topped 100 million copies. Criterion’s latest instalment received rave reviews from critics around the world and won a ton of awards. Hot Pursuit, became the highest rated Need For Speed title ever and set a new bar for online excellence with its BAFTA winning innovative Autolog feature set.”
“We are hiring and actively looking to add the world’s top talent to a team that just delivered the highest rated Need for Speed title yet. This is a very exciting time at Criterion Games and anyone that joins us will be working on top selling, world class games, on cutting edge hardware in an extremely creative environment.”
If Criterion is indeed working on Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 then the next question is when will it be released? Could this game come out as early as the end of 2012 or is it more likely that we’ll see it sometime next year? Get speculating in the comments section below!
