Rockstar Games has just announced that the company’s “new dark, gritty action experience,” Max Payne 3, will be released early next year, with details on the game’s multiplayer revealed, too.

Also: New screenshots.

Releasing in March 2012, Max Payne 3 will continue the tale of former New York detective Max Payne, and according to Rockstar, the game is “sure to satisfy both newcomers and veterans to the historic franchise” when it lands on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC next year.

I’m a franchise veteran, so here’s hoping.

Here’s a bit of the story set-up:

“Still haunted by the memories of his traumatic past, Max begins a new life working private security protecting a wealthy industrialist and his family in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“When gangs target the family under his protection, Max is forced to fight to save his clients and clear his name, in a bid to, once and for all, rid himself of the demons that have tortured him for far too long.”

Max Payne 3 is in development across multiple Rockstar studios and picks up after the events of Max Payne 2. This new game is said to take advantage of “cutting edge technology for a seamless, cinematic action experience” as well as the “latest advances in Natural Motion physics,” all running on the latest version of Rockstar’s ‘RAGE’ engine.

Of course, “sophisticated” Bullet-Time mechanics will be included (it wouldn’t be a Max Payne game without it), while a cover-based shooting system is also in place.

Additional details on the multiplayer of Max Payne 3 have also been revealed, the first game in the series to include any such offering.

The multiplayer of Max Payne 3 will feature dynamically changing maps and mode progression for all players in a match, and while traditional multiplayer modes are included, players will benefit from a “deep reward and leveling system, persistent clans and multiple strategic load-out options.”

Awesome!
