It?s been a rollercoaster ride for the music genre in the videogame industry over the past few years. The competition has been fierce between two of the most popular series, Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but with the recent news that the Guitar Hero franchise would be discontinued we?ve been left wondering about where the industry will go from here.

Well it seems as if we may just have the answer from Ubisoft, who recently unveiled Rocksmith. Described by the publisher as a ?revolutionary new music videogame? that will ?revolutionise the music genre,? Rocksmith is being touted to be the ?first and only videogame that plugs into any real guitar.? With many gamers complaining about the number of plastic instrument peripherals clogging up their closets and lounges, we think Ubisoft may just be on to something here.

With Rocksmith you?ll be able to plug any real guitar with a standard quarter-inch input jack into your Xbox 360, PS3 or PC. The game is said to feature an in-depth library of music, ranging from the latest hits to classic rock songs, including the likes of The Animals, The Black Keys, David Bowie, Interpol, Nirvana and The Rolling Stones.

Watch the debut trailer below to see what it’s all about:

Perhaps the most interesting feature that we?ve learned about Rocksmith so far is that it features gameplay that automatically adjusts to the player?s skill level. It is also said to include ?innovative game design that makes reading music visually fun and intuitive? while the publisher promises that it will engage both experienced musicians and beginners alike.

?Rocksmith is the most authentic and addictive music game ever created,? said Geoffroy Sardin, HQ Chief Marketing & Sales Officer at Ubisoft EMEA. ?Whether a beginner or a seasoned guitarist, players can progress at their own speed and walk away from the game with the ability to play songs by memory. Rocksmith is the only video game that gets players stage-ready.?

Rocksmith is currently in development by Ubisoft and is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2011. Cast your gaze below to watch trailers with the beginner, gamer and musician all getting rowdy with Rocksmith.
