MotorStorm Apocalypse delayed in the UK following travesty in Japan

Following the tragic events in Japan this past week, and as a sign of respect for the lives lost and devastation caused by the earthquakes and resultant tsunamis in the country, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has announced a delay for the release of MotorStorm Apocalypse in the UK, after the release of the game was likewise delayed in Japan.

A SCE UK representative said of the delay:

?Although we have shipped the game into the channel last week, given that we are able to do so, we have chosen to postpone the launch in the UK. In the meantime we will continue to monitor the situation very closely.?

MotorStorm Apocalypse, which was due for release this Friday in the UK, features the exploits of a band of thrill-seeking racers going head-to-head in a city destroyed by earthquakes and currently enduring further tremors, as buildings collapse and incredible set-piece action explodes around you.

Of course, this premise mirrors the dreadful and catastrophic events in Japan recently, so it?s a great gesture on Sony Computer Entertainment?s part to delay the title. The statement continued:

?We are shocked and saddened to see the impact of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and our thoughts are with all those affected, including our colleagues within the Sony family, living and working throughout Japan.

?We are very conscious of the parallels between these events and the underlying theme in Motorstorm and are doing everything we can to be as sensitive as possible to the situation. Although the game itself is already in distribution, we are ceasing any further shipments and removing as much of the marketing materials as possible.?

Good on you.

This news follows similar announcements by Japanese game companies, as Sony has reportedly suspended the development of at least six titles, while Disaster Report 4 (a game dealing with earthquakes and other disasters) from Irem has been flat out cancelled.

Additionally, the operation of several online games has been temporarily suspended, including Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Online, and the release of SEGA’s latest Yakuza title, Yakuza Of the End (another title that deals with a city struck by disaster), has been delayed indefinitely.
