If you’re hankering for more Demon’s Souls action then you’re in luck. Not only is the spiritual successor to that game - Dark Souls - releasing towards the end of the year, but a new title boasting a similar dark fantasy style has also entered the fray.
The Cursed Crusade will be multi-platform and is due for release sometime around the middle of this year. Atlus will handle publishing duties (in the USA at least) and a relatively unknown French developer named Kylotonn Entertainment is developing it.
You may remember that Atlus published Demon’s Souls in North America but lost out on the sequel’s publishing rights to Namco Bandai (who published that game in Europe). Perhaps they’re still smarting over that loss and see The Cursed Crusade as a viable way to compete in the action RPG space.
The PR manager over at Atlus, Aram Jabbari, explains the game like this:
“A story of salvation and survival, The Cursed Crusade brings to life the mystery and allure of the Middle Ages. The game’s main characters are not heroes; they’re just men, susceptible to temptation, easily made to feel doubt and despair.
“The raw, gritty accuracy of many of the game’s historical locations is sharply contrasted by Denz and Esteban’s supernatural struggle to save their souls. Their affliction, the Templar’s Curse, threatens to accelerate their descent into hell, burning their humanity away as it engulfs the space around them in demonic flame.”
The Cursed Crusade will feature a two-player co-op mode, and in a welcome move, will include both local split-screen and online support. The game will include 40 missions, over 130 weapons and more than 90 combos. So the emphasis seems placed firmly on action, judging by the two trailers below.

Can it surpass Demon’s Souls’ brilliance or is that a bridge too far for an inexperienced developer like Kylotonn Entertainment? Remember that From Software (the masterminds behind Demon’s Souls) had a long history of RPG development, which included the King’s Field series on the PS1 and PS2. Many people view King’s Field as a forerunner to the game mechanics employed so effectively in DS.
