Media Create Japanese Hardware Sales for week ending April 8th: PS Vita sales drop below 10k

The latest Media Create hardware chart sees overall console sales dwindle by 32% compared to last week. The only console to receive a sales boost was the Xbox 360 which enjoyed a 286% increase in sales thanks to the release of Kinect Star Wars on April 5th.

The PS Vita finally dropped below the all-important 10k barrier, causing many forumites to prematurely pronounce that it is doomed in Japan. We all know that the 3DS got off to a slow start, but at a similar point in its life cycle Nintendo’s handheld was selling 33k a week compared to the PS Vita’s current figure of 9k. We’ll just have to wait and see what Sony does to resurrect the Vita in Japan but without compelling new software being released on a regular basis the system will always be on the back foot.

Here’s this week’s chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

Hardware Chart

  • 3DS – 72 115 (121 921)
  • PS3 – 19 370 (23 771)
  • PSP – 14 804 (18 356)
  • PS Vita - 8 931 (12 105)
  • Wii – 7 099 (9 292)

  • PS2 – 1 355 (1 374)
