Street Fighter X Tekken Vita was one of the titles that journalists gathered from all over the world were scheduled to see during last week’s Captivate event in Rome. What we didn’t know was that it would turn out to be the rowdiest and one of the most fun presentations of the entire event, due largely to the presence of Street Fighter X Tekken Producer, Yoshinori Ono.
Ono, who had been quite ill recently, kicked off the presentation by thanking all of us for the get well messages that he had received over the past few weeks. He assured us that he was still very much alive, despite the numerous rumours doing the rounds, and that he was still with Capcom.
Ono then showed us two limited edition Street Fighter X Tekken T-shirts and said whoever was the rowdiest during the presentation would stand in line to win the awesome swag. Of course we needed no further encouragement and each announcement was then followed by thunderous applause and even loud whistling. Ono also handed out branded plasters to each of us, and said it was a promise between him and us that we would clap often…and loudly. Ono went on to say that it was a great time to be showing us Street Fighter X Tekken Vita and chatting about Street Fighter X Tekken because it was the franchise’s 25th Anniversary. He also promised to continue to give great experiences with the game from here on out.
Street Fighter X Tekken update
The presentation for Street Fighter X Tekken focused on three topics: improved online experience, elimination of infinite combos and continuous support. With regard to the problematic network environment, especially concerning sound related problems, the development team has heard the opinions of the fans and have listened. To address these concerns, a free patch will be available on the 10th of April to give improved sound in online battles in the Tournament Support mode.
There will also be a free title update that will give over 60 new gems and replay analyser and additional gem save loadouts – this title update will be dated in the future. Some of the things you can look forward to are Pandora extend, Ultimate guard and Expert Input. Pandora Extend will allow you to sacrifice characters to give you a 20 second power-up boost to another character instead of the 10 second boost. Ultimate guard combines Auto Block, Auto Throw Escape and Chip Damage Negation into one chip. Take note that this requires one block per meter per use, and also that if you block by yourself you’ll still take chip damage. Expert Input requires precise inputs.
Ono then moved on to give some information about the May downloadable content, which will be a mix of free and paid content. It will add colours from Palette 3 (free), include the Street Fighter X Tekken Assist Gem Pack 4 for $2/160 Microsoft Points and the Street Fighter X Tekken Booster Pack 3 and 4 for $1/80 Microsoft Points. Ono rounded off his part of the presentation by stating that battle related bugs (that leads to infinite combos) is being fixed.
Ono was one of the most animated, friendly people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Passionate about Street Fighter, in a way he reminded me a bit of Charles Martinet, the man behind the voice of Nintendo’s Mario. Martinet always travels with Mario and Luigi figurines who pose in most pictures he takes with his fans. Likewise Ono travels with Blanka, as you can see from the picture below.
Street Fighter X Tekken Vita experience
We then moved on to the Street Fighter X Tekken Vita, and were shown a new trailer for the game. It’s not just a port of the console experience, but rather it will give players a full console experience but with added new features to give a unique experience and use the power of the PS Vita to give players new challenges.
Then came the exciting news that Street Fighter X Tekken Vita will feature cross platform matchmaking between the PS3 and PS Vita. The PS Vita version will feature 12 new characters, who you’ll be able to use on the PS3 as well if you own both versions of the game. This new character sharing and cross platform matchmaking was then demonstrated in a demo. The demo showed how the normal screen displayed the 43 characters, but when you purchase the PS Vita version that changed to include the 12 new characters.
The team then highlighted the features of Street Fighter X Tekken Vita. These features included intuitive colour customisation (you can simply shake the PS Vita to get a random colour select) and touch battle controls (touch screen and rear touch controls). When you’re using the cross platform matchmaking feature the two platforms sync in real time while players are making their choice – the two screens are identical in real time (as demonstrated) because the two platforms are constantly exchanging data to give players a seamless real time experience and smooth gameplay, either via 3G or Wi-Fi.
The team has used the PS Vita functions to their fullest potential. The touch screen and rear touch pad, which have both already been implemented, and Augmented Reality with the camera as well as Digital Compass (Near), which they have plans to implement and will reveal specifics of in the coming months.
Street Fighter X Tekken Vita is looking mighty indeed. We had some hands-on time with a multiplayer demo at Captivate, and the control system is responsive, with the touch screen and rear touch pads fitting seamlessly into the gameplay. It’s a natural fit with the PS Vita, and promises to deliver hours of on the go gaming with bright and clear graphics when the game is released.

Before I sign off, just in case you were wondering, I didn’t win the Street Fighter X Tekken T-shirt, but I did walk away with a branded bandana for my rowdy efforts!
