The Resident Evil 6 development team showed us actual gameplay footage during a presentation at last week’s Captivate event in Rome. This gave us a glimpse into the beginning of Leon’s story and how it progresses in the game.
The president of the United States has been infected and becomes a zombie. Leon is forced to shoot him in a dramatic scene where the President is moving menacingly towards Helena. A call from Ingrid comes through and Leon, still visibly shaken while Helena sobs in the corner, tells her ‘I just shot the President.’ Leon tells Ingrid that he has a lead, trusting Helena who said she can show him the ones responsible at the Tall Oaks Cathedral.
Leon and Helena set out to escape from the compound. He pushes open the door and finds zombies in the offices. There is a distance indicator on-screen, showing you exactly where to go and how far you have to go to get there. You have to wait for your partner to progress to certain areas, for example for Helena to get to the door and cover Leon while he enters the next room. There’s an abandoned reception dinner, balloons dotted around the smartly decorated tables. A shadow darts past and Leon sets out to follow it into the kitchen.
They discover a father searching for his daughter, Liz. Even though Leon has his own mission and doesn’t know the man, he agrees to help search the compound for the daughter. The father goes ahead, searching with a flashlight and calling out his daughter’s name. As we search in the dark we get a taste of the new kind of horror that we’ve never experienced in Resident Evil before. A storm rumbles into existence outside, the wind is rattling the chandeliers and the lightning flashes illuminate the surroundings every now and again. A chandelier falls, it’s raining hard, the sound of breaking glass fills the air…it’s an example of the horror being part of the gameplay, not just in the cut-scenes.
The father is coughing, he says the fog came from no-where. The development team says the fog plays a key part in the story, but said we would find out more when we played the game. Leon points out that the corpses will become infected soon and they’re running out of time. The father runs ahead, there are thunder claps and lightning, which show a bloody handprint on the door and a blood trail leading into a room where you find Liz. She’s weak and her father helps her to limp out of the room.
Fallen beams block the path but Leon and Helena move them and we continue towards the elevator. Once inside, Liz is coughing badly and then dies. The father is distraught and starts to cry, his coughing fits get worse and then the light in the elevator flashes off. The coughing stops and when the light flashes back on they’ve turned into zombies and attack you. You shake them off using the analogue stick and then shoot them. The lift stops and you exit it, you can hear gurgling sounds and when you look with the torch you see the carpark is filled with zombies. There are car alarms going off and the zombies are shuffling towards you.
Some are armed, for instance a security guard has a pipe when he lunges at you. You disarm him and use the pipe to kill him. You’re pushed on to your back, and several zombies lunge at you, you use the left button to repel their attacks and take a knife out of a zombie’s chest, using it to kill him. The camera pans to the carpark exit and you see the gate is lined with zombies. Leon is now in a security room, he sees two men waving with ‘Help’ banners on one of the security cameras. You notice a crowd of zombies coming from behind them and Leon makes a move to try and help but, as Helena points out, it’s too late, the zombies are right on them, attack and kill them. Leon looks away. The development team is not relying on first aid spray in the game, rather you can use an herb to make tablets and recover health that way. You can just push one button in a fight to recover health by eating a tablet.
This was a glimpse of the singleplayer mode of Resident Evil 6. The game also includes co-op features where two people play simultaneously with a partner. There will be local play, and online co-op, where a second player can join at any point in the game, unlike Resident Evil 5 where you had to go back to checkpoint to start the co-op experience. The split-screen is split horizontally, and you can change the user interface, move it to the left or to the right to help distinguish who you are and what you’re doing in the game. In addition each character will have a special interface, depending on the character the user interface will change.
We also learnt that an extra game mode will be included with Resident Evil 6 – The Mercenaries! Unlike Resident Evil 4 and 5 the Mercenaries mode will be available to play from the beginning, although the team hope that you will play the stories before you play the Mercenaries mode, but it’s really up to you.
The development team then thanked us for coming to Captivate and said they hoped they’d given us a nice taste of Resident Evil 6, although they assured us that we will be getting more information about the game soon and that this was just the tip of the iceberg.
