Fans of the MechWarrior game franchise, it’s time to get excited because Piranha Games has formally announced MechWarrior Online, a new action title that embodies everything you know and enjoy about the classic mech-based warfare series wrapped up in a premium free-to-play package.
Due for release in the second half of 2012 for PC, MechWarrior Online is set in the year 3049 against the backdrop of an interstellar war. In order to join the fight, players will get to control a mech war machine while upgrading and customising their destroyer with new weapon types and appearance options.
So far, we’ve heard word on Conquest and Versus modes for online play, while four players can join together to form a ‘Mercenary Corp.’ which others can hire to help with missions.
In addition, MechWarrior has been described as being more closely related to previous MechWarrior titles from the second to fourth iterations of the series, rather than the 2002 Xbox game, MechAssault, while dynamic events and fresh story additions are promised.
Co-founder of Piranha Games, Russ Bullock, said of MechWarrior Online:
?We?re excited to lead the MechWarrior franchise online for fans of the series. We?re proud to partner with Infinite Game Publishing, and are thankful for the fans of the MechWarrior series that have been so patient for the next MechWarrior game to arrive.
“Infinite Game is a partner who understands both the world of games publishing and the crucial technical needs of today?s AAA online gaming experiences.”
To assuage any concerns you may have about this new free-to-play direction for MechWarrior, Piranha has let it be known that the developer has focussed on four core pillars while creating the game, namely:
- Mech Warfare ? The embodiment of Mech to Mech combat.
- Role Warfare ? The ability for player?s to customize their experience to suit their own style of gameplay.
- Community Warfare ? The ability to let the players take part in epic combat for territorial control.
- Information Warfare ? Bring a new element to the battlefield that incorporates information technology to help control the fight.
You can read more full descriptions of each of these at the official website, and also read PC Gamer’s interview with Piranha for more information.
