While a facelift version of the Audi R8 is expected to be launched sometime next year, the second generation will be launched in late 2014. And the first details on the upcoming R8 suggest that Audi will mostly focus on reducing the sports car’s weight. In fact this is not the first time we report about a lighter R8: back in February TopSpeed reported about the "R8 NF" - a lighter version of the current R8.
Now, new rumors suggest that the second generation Audi R8 will be featuring a hybrid aluminum and carbon fiber structure - and not a full carbon fiber monocoque as Lamborghini did with the new Aventador. In an interview with Automobilwoche Michael Dick, head of development at Audi said that the combination of the two materials may end up being even better and of course less expensive.
Next to the chassis, the suspension, engine components, body work, and electronics will also go on a diet. Also it has been rumored that the engine will be mated to a dual-clutch transmission.
