The last few years have seen Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) shift their focus away from Japan to North America and Europe, where the majority of their customers reside. This was abundantly clear during the recent PSN outage when service was initially restored to North America followed closely by Europe. Asia had to wait an additional couple of weeks before the PSN service was restored, and Japan is still without the Playstation Store - more than two months after the PSN hack.
Further evidence of this change in focus emerged today with the news that SCE Europe boss Andrew House will replace Kaz Hirai as group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment in September. Hirai will then supplant Akira Sato as SCE’s Chairman in the wake of Sato’s retirement.House has been closely involved with PlayStation branded products since 1990 when PS1 was still being developed. Hirai had the following to say about his successor:
“I’m confident that the skills and expertise Andy has gained over two decades working for Sony and SCE Group will contribute enormously in leading the PlayStation business and to bring new initiatives in managing the business in the networked era.”
It will be interesting to see what changes House brings to the PlayStation domain following his appointment as president, and where he takes the brand knowing its history as well as he does. There are so many entertainment devices competing for our spare time these days that it must be incredibly challenging to keep a brand like PlayStation at the forefront of consumers’ minds.
The staff here at El33tonline wish Andrew and Kaz all the best in their new positions.
