A long time ago, in an E3 conference that now feels far, far away, Microsoft revealed the makings of a Star Wars game for Kinect. Not much has been heard about this game since that momentous day at E3 2010. Not much, that is, until now. Today?s announcement brings with it a huge sigh of relief for all my fellow Star Wars geeks and myself: what?s been on LucasArts? agenda for a year has been on our hearts for much, much longer.
The latest trailer for Kinect Star Wars has not only confirmed that the game?s still alive but revealed some interesting tidbits of what to expect. From what can be made out, the game is starting to take shape very impressively and if rumours today are to be believed it?s looking very near finished.
The graphics look very sharp and responsive when compared to last year and the interactions don?t seem to be limited just to Jedi lightsaber duels. The demo showcases a player using just the power of the Kinect to jump in the air, deflect blaster shots, kick things, manipulate the Force to lift objects and rapidly move into combat and, of course, slicing foes into pieces with a lightsaber!
Controlling a Jedi Knight isn?t the only fun to be had with Kinect Star Wars. Latest footage also shows you darting through space in fighters, driving podracers, and even controlling a giant Rancor! The game demonstration at E3 also revealed Imperial Walkers, Cloud City, Speeder Bikes and plenty of the timeless John Williams music.
If one hopes to dig deeper than the normal observer to ?uncover? secret reveals from the trailer, some individuals are murmuring that the trailer also shows a hands-free method of powering on the Xbox (using the Force, perhaps?) but I have my suspicions that this was more for cinematic effect rather than being a subtle reveal but only time will tell for sure!
Frantic hand waving won?t be the only feature used in Kinect Star Wars either, as the game is rumoured to support voice controls (better prepare your best Darth Vader impersonation!) and there?ll also be a lightsaber replica to make you feel a lot less like the Star Wars Kid and a lot more like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Unlike Obi-Wan you won?t necessarily be alone either, as Kinect Star Wars is set to support some unique two player game modes.
Provided the trailer isn?t trying to hoodwink us then judging by what?s been shown so far by the time Kinect Star Wars is released it will be the game we?re looking for!
