South Africa?s Soweto Gospel Choir nominated for Grammy award thanks to Civilization IV

Christopher Tin

When Firaxis? strategy title, Civilization IV, released on PC in 2005, it was accompanied by a stirring opening theme called ?Baba Yetu,? a piece of music composed by musician Christopher Tin and featuring the vocal performances of South Africa?s Soweto Gospel Choir.

Now, five years later, that piece of music (as well as another of Tin?s works) has been nominated for a Grammy Award next year ? the first time music from a videogame has cracked the nod.

The nomination is for ?Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists,? and is up against music from Roger Treece (?Baby?), Vince Mendoza (?Based On A Thousand True Stories?), Geoffrey Keezer (?Don?t Explain?) and Herbie Hancock and Larry Klein (?Imagine?)

Christopher Tin?s other nomination is under the category of ?Best Classical Crossover Album? for his debut album, Calling All Dawns (clearly influenced by ?Calling All Cars?? or maybe not) - Baba Yetu is this album?s opening track.

The winners of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, a ceremony recognising outstanding achievements in the music industry, will be announced on February 13th 2011. Until then, you can enjoy the soothing sounds of the nominated track, Baba Yetu:
